What We Do
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness / NAMI Southwest Iowa:
- provides free educational classes.
- provides free peer-led support groups for
- people with mental health conditions.
- family members, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions.
- reduces stigma and increases community awareness about mental illness.
NAMI Southwest Iowa is made up of local volunteers who serve in their communities. We serve nine counties: Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, and Shelby.

- Treatments for mental illness vary by diagnosis and by person. There’s no “one size fits all” treatment.
- Unlike diabetes or cancer, there is no medical test that can accurately diagnose mental illness.
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14.
