What We Do

The men and women of the Fremont County Sheriff's Office are professional public servants. Through partnership with our community and with unconditional respect, we faithfully provide safety, security, and service to enhance the quality of life for every resident, business, and visitor.

On June 14, 2022 Deputy Austin "Melvin" Richardson passed away in a traffic crash while on duty.  Melvin began his law enforcement career with the Auburn, NE Police Department on December 17, 2007 where he worked for five years.  He later began working as a police officer for the City of Sidney, IA on June 20, 2011.  He started his career with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department on August 31, 2015.  He was a member of the Sidney Fire/Rescue and the Percival Fire/Rescue. His wife, 3 daughters, and many family and friends cherish their memories of Melvin.  In his honor, his wife and the Sheriff's Office created the Deputy Melvin Richardson "Be Good" Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office and the Richardson family created this fund in memory of Deputy Melvin Richardson. This fund will support scholarships for students from southwest Iowa wishing to pursue a career in law enforcement. Donations to this fund are eligible for the Community Foundation's match and the Endow Iowa tax credit.
